Class Description & Attire

Acro

This class will focus mainly on flexibility and strength, utilizing jazz technique and music. Students will learn basic tumbling/acrobatic skills that will add to any dancer’s repertoire.

Attire:

  • Shorts, fitted leggings, footless tights and a bodysuit or tight fitted top (no loose clothing or flared dance/yoga pants please)
  • Bare Feet
  • Hair pulled back off the face in a ponytail, braid, bun etc.

 

Ballet

Ballet is one of the oldest dance forms and is an important asset to any young dancer. Ballet not only builds the foundation needed to become a strong technical dancer, but more importantly a safe dancer. Students will develop their technique, flexibility, body awareness and discipline, through this graceful and beautiful form of movement.

Attire:

  • Hair for all levels is to be pulled back off the face in a bun, ponytail or french braid.

Pre, Pre/Kinder & Kinder Ballet:

  • Tights, tutu, bodysuit, leggings, fitted shirt etc. Easy to move in and fitted clothing
  • Ballet shoes (no padded slippers please) or bare feet

Ballet 1, 2, 3 & 4:

  • Leotard colour of your choice, pink ballet tights, a light ballet skirt is allowed but may be asked to be removed to see body alignment
  • Pink leather ballet shoes (1 & 2) and canvas ballet shoes (3 & 4)

 

Combo Classes

The children will gain experience in two different styles (tap, jazz or ballet) while working on coordination, flexibility and poise. The basics of each style will be touched on and there will be lots of room for creativity, dress-up and play. This is a great foundation and introduction to the world of dance!

Highland

This is a highly energetic and aerobic dance class. Students will be focused on learning set dances that originated in Scotland, such as the well known Sword Dance and Highland Fling. This class will strengthen the muscles of the legs and feet with high intensity hopping and jumping.

Attire:

  • Body suit, fitted shirt or tank top
  • Shorts/kilt or skort with knee high socks (knees must be exposed to perform proper placement and sock sits just below the knee)
  • Hair must be pulled back off the face in a bun, braid or ponytail
  • Black Highland Shoes, which can be found at Tartantown (first year dancers can wear black ballet shoes)

 

Hip Hop & Breakdance

In today’s culture, hip hop is easily the most publicized and known dance form. This class will allow the students to learn all different forms of hip hop such as popping, locking, house and much more. The breakdance class will focus on just the breaking genre of hip hop. Get ready for high energy fun!

Attire:

  • Athletic clothes, no jeans (pants that cover the knees are better for knee slides)
  • Long hair pulled back off the face

Tot Hip Hop:

  • Bare feet or clean, indoor, flat soled sneakers

Hip Hop & Breakdance 6+yrs:

  • Clean, indoor, flat soled sneakers

 

Jazz

This high energy class takes the technique of ballet and puts it into a fast and fun paced movement vocabulary. Students will learn a variety of movements that will work on body isolations and coordination as well as strength and flexibility.

Attire:

  • Athletic, form fitting clothes such as leggings, tights or yoga pants, a tank top, bodysuit/leotard or form fitted t-shirts. No jeans
  • Hair pulled back off the face in a ponytail, braid, bun etc.

Pre/Kinder Jazz:

  • Bare feet

Jazz 1, 2, 3, 4:

  • Beige leather jazz shoe (bare feet is OK for the Spring Session only)

 

Lyrical

This graceful, style of dance utilizes the technique learned in ballet and puts it into a free flowing, melodic dance form. Students will learn how to emote a song's lyrics with their expressions and movements. Students must be in ballet at least once a week to enroll in this class.

Attire:

  • Form fitting clothes such as leggings, athletic shorts, tights or yoga pants, tank tops, body suits or form fitted t-shirts. No jeans
  • Beige jazz shoes
  • Hair pulled back off the face in a ponytail, braid, bun etc.

 

Musical Theatre

This fun filled class involves singing, dancing and acting! With a jazz basis, students will learn how to perform some of their favourite musical pieces and popular songs.

Attire:

  • Form fitting clothes such as leggings, tights or yoga pants, tank tops, body suits or form fitted t-shirts. No jeans
  • No shoes required
  • Hair pulled back off the face in a ponytail, braid, bun etc.

 

Rhythm Babies & Kids

This is a parent participation class, which allows for child and parent bonding and assists in developing the child’s sense of rhythm, coordination, creativity, social skills and sense of play. Through dance, music, dress-up and stories, parents can watch and aid in their child’s artistic development. This is also a great time to meet other families in the area!

Attire:

  • Comfy clothes for both you and your child
  • Bare feet or socks/slippers with grip for your child

 

Tap

Tap allows for a dancers body to become a percussive instrument with the help of tap shoes. It uses upbeat music and adds a rhythmic twist. Students will learn the importance of the music’s beat and rhythm in this high energy class.

Attire:

  • Form fitting clothes such as leggings, tights or yoga pants. No jeans.
  • Black tap shoes are required
  • Hair pulled back off the face in a ponytail, bun, braid, pigtails etc.
